This education programme examining the relationship traditional Maori have with water, gives students a hands-on opportunity to learn lessons on sustainability from the past.
The contents of each programme are constructed around the learning intentions of the teacher, however 'Water Sustainablility' education programmes in the past have contained:
- Discussion based around archival photos
- Presentations on traditional beliefs/customs of Maori to do with the sustainability of water
- A group challenge to find artifacts relating to how traditional Maori used water and try to work out what they are
- A story to do with the preservation in water of Uenuku.
- Hands-on with water related artifacts
- Presentations of sustainable farming practices powered by water in the mid nineteenth century
- Site tour of an1850's mill site and/or Lake Ngaroto
The Water Sustainability education programme usually runs for 2 hours, but we are flexible to meet the needs of the classroom teacher.
