Matariki

Matariki

Matariki, Aotearoa's very own New Year, begins on June the 14th in 2010. Matariki can be a celebration of ancestors, a time of learning, a time to gather and prepare food, and so much more. The Matariki education progamme brings an interactive and hands-on approach to understanding this national event.

The contents of each programme are constructed around the learning intentions of the teacher, however the Matariki programme may contain:

  • Discussions based around archival photographs
  • Learn about local ancestors depicted in carvings in the Tangata Whenua gallery
  • Learn traditional techniques for food gathering, with hands-on experience with traditonal food gathering and food preparation collection items
  • Students work in groups to make their own traditional kite to celebrate the new year

Programmes usually last 90 minutes but we are flexible to suit the needs of the teacher and student..
