Students literally walk in the footsteps of our ancestors in this programme of discovery. The 'Walking in the Shoes of Our Ancestors' education programme is based around the central business district of historical Te Awamutu, where students discover what remains today of Te Awamutu's early history.
The contents of each programme are custom designed with the classroom teacher and are usually based around a 'discovery' activity. This activity splits the students into groups. Each group receives a series of picture clues, descriptions of significant items, and a map - all combined together on an interactive puzzle board. The board guides students around the historical locations of Te Awamutu while they search for and discover items of historical significance in order to solve the puzzle.
The 'discovery' activity is complemented with a presentation on the pre-European Maori history of Te Awamutu.
