Family Life in the Late 19th Century

Family Life in the Late 19th Century

The "Family life in the late 19th Century" programme offers students the opportunity to work together to solve challenges relating to the changes in household technology over the last 100 years. With 4 permanent displays, historic photos/film, and hands-on interaction, this programme will excite students about the past.

The museum-based activites are custom designed through consultation with the classroom teacher and are based around their learning intentions. An effort is made to ensure all main points are taught through something to see, hear and do.
A typical programme runs for 90 minutes, and may consist of the following:

Discussion based on historic photos and film to do with family life in early Te Awamutu
Interactive activites allow the students to engage with our permanenet displays -Victorian Palour, a dressmaker, Drug Store, Telegraph Office, and Hardware Store and notice for themselves how seemingly simple household tasks used to be. This activity lends itself to prizes
Focused hands-on experience with collection objects
Student and teacher resources are avaliable.

Curriculum links could include: Social Science - Time, Continuit and Change.

This programme can be complemented with an interactive visit to a historic cottage.

Recent feedback:

  • Highlights: I really enjoyed the activities where the students had to look closely at the pictues and match them on their page. I also enjoyed how this encouraged the students to try and find their clues and find out more information about the school equipment, fantastic.
  • Programme: i really enjoyed the programme, it was hands on and full of new information for the students. The students really enjoyed the session and this showed because they could not stop talking about the whole session when we got back (a great sign). They learnt so much but in a realy fun way thanks.
  • Facilitator: The facillitator was great with the students. The students really respected him because Alan respected them. It was obviour that Alan has worked with a lot of kids because he knew how to speak at their level and relate various stories to his own life which my students love - Natasha - Rhode Street School
