TheTraditional Māori Food Gathering education programme is centred around students using the large hands-on collection of food gathering equipment and supporting resources to problem solve and discover the purpose of three pre-european tools.
The contents of each programme are constructed around the learning intentions of the teacher, however in the past tradiational Maori food gathering programmes have contained:
- Hands-on experience with a large collection of early Maori food gathering technology
- Interactive team activities centring students on the tangata whenua gallery food gathering collection
- Archival photographs
- Site tours of seasonal food gathering pa sites
- Custom presenations focusing on specific food gathering techniques
Programmes usually last 90 minutes but we are flexible to suit the needs of the teacher and students.
Recent teacher feedback from the Traditional Maori Food Gathering' education programme.
- Highlights: Hands-on experiences with the tools was invaluable. Recording through use of boards with pictures gave accessibility to everyone. It was great to have a change of pace to balance the physical outdoors activities. Parents commented very favourably on this too. One mother (Maori) was excited to see and handle implements she had never seen before.
- Programme: very interesting, fun and informative for children and parents. Everyone was totally engaged in learning.
- Facilitator: excellent. I liked your interaction with the children both in the "classroom" and outside. Many thanks Alan. We would enjoy doing a programme such as this again. Robin - Puketaha School
