School Days

School Days

This programme helps students to understand what school life was like for our grandparents and great-grandparents with our hands-on approach to learning.

The museum-based activites are custom designed with the classroom teacher and are usually based around their learning intentions. An effort is made to ensure all main points are taught through something to see, hear and do.

Depending on your learning intentions programmes may include:

  • Historic film footage depicting what the different aspects of school life were like for young New Zealanders in the early 20th century

  • Photographs of the local schools and the classroom environment where students were educated

  • The hands-on collection of school day artifacts

However the School Days programme is centred around paticipation, where children experience what school was like through hands-on activities. Activities include ink nib pen writing, tasting school milk, experiencing the murder house, slates, period costume, playground toys, singing God Save the Queen, stories and mathematics, and more!

Programmes normally run for one hour and twenty minutes, but we are flexible to suit your needs. This programme can be complemented with an interactive visit to a historic cottage.

Recent teacher feedback on the programme School Days:

  • Highlights: It met the all ages from year 0 through to year 8 as often the programmes we visit relating to such topics are geared at a much higher level and don't my class are very quickly off task as it is way above theri heads. We actually ran out of time that is a refelction on how awesome the acitivity stations were and we are still using these to extend our thinking of the 1960s
  • Programme: Fabulaous and interactive and provided extensive discussion around the decades back in the classroom.
  • Facilitator: Alan understood the developmental levels and attention spans of all ages and allowed for this when sharing infromation about the 50s and 60s ensuring that all students were focussed and on task the entire time. Also using a group of our senior students to support our Junior students learning reflects totally our whanau concept here at Rhode Street, he allowed this to happen in a stress free way. thanks muchly for the experience
