Toys of Early Te Awamutu

Toys of Early Te Awamutu

Te Awamutu Museum has a large and varied hands on collection of toys, toy related historic photographs and film, all waiting to meet the needs of your students.

The museum-based activites are custom designed with the classroom teacher and are usually based around their learning intentions. An effort is made to ensure all main points are taught through something to see, hear and do.

Depending on your learning intentions programmes may include:

  • Exploring and playing with the museum's large hands-on collection of toys
  • Historic photographs of toys and children interacting with toys
  • Search and discover activities
  • Archival film footage
  • Period costumes dress-ups
  • Making a simple toy, such as a cup and ball, or thermotrope

Programmes normally run for one hour and twenty minutes, but we are flexible to suit your needs. This programme can be complemented with an interactive visit to a historic cottage.

Recent teacher feedback on the programme Toys of Early Te Awamutu:

  • Highlights: Variety of activities - power point photographs, questioning, display of toys, demonstration of how toys work , dress ups, and playing with the toys - teaching children to make their own version of an old toy. All children engaged, making links to their own toys and what we had covered in class.
  • Programme: Well balanced, fast paced, interactive, informative and fun!
  • Facilitator: Well planned, clear expectations, related well to the children, good management, knowledgable. Many thanks for a great experience for our kids. Their feed back has been very postive - they all enjoyed it and definitely learnt something about the differences between the old and the new.
