Uncover the past with our hands-on archaeology programme. This programme is based around the discoveries of an archaeological excavation at Alexandra Redoubt in Pirongia. These 150 year old discoveries give insight into the realities of life for the resident Armed Constabulary, and reinforce the idea that you can really tell a lot about a person by what they throw away.
The contents of each programme are custom designed with the classroom teacher and are usually based around their learning intentions. An effort is made to ensure all main points are taught through something to see, hear and do.
Depending on your learning intentions programmes may include:
- Talking to our resident archaeologist
- Presentations and discussions that walk your students through the basics of archaeology and delve into the big questions like, 'How do archaeologists know where to dig?'
- Interactive exploration and problem solving with the discoveries of an archaeological excavation
- Hands-on with archaeological artifacts
- Practical activities with archaeological 'tools' where students chip away to see what they can discover
- Tours of the Alexandra Redoubt
