Visitors to the McDougall

My two abiding memories of Te Maori at the McDougall was firstly the visit of Oliver Tambo, second in command of the African National Congress (ANC) after Nelson Mandela, from South Africa who was welcomed into the Gallery in the normal way but before opening hours due to security reasons. It was electric and in reply to the Maori welcome Mr Tambo and his two South African security guards sang the ANC national anthem back. You could hear a pin drop and the atmosphere was electric - totally amazing and the second one was when Windsor Davies from the BBC comedy show "It ain't half hot mum" was spotted in the Gallery and pulled out of Te Maori to be welcomed and in return he sang the Welsh National anthem in Welsh. It stopped the whole gallery as he has an amazing voice.
