In 1857 geologist and explorer Ferdinand Ritter von Hochstetter began a world-wide voyage of scientific discovery on board the Austrian frigate, Novara. His travels brought him to New Zealand, where he conducted a major geological study of the Waikato and Bay of Plenty area.
Printed in Germany in 1859, and entitled Der Sudliche Theil der Provinz Auckland in Neu Seeland (The Southern Part of the Auckland Province in New Zealand), this map was compiled from Hochstetter’s notes and sketches during his study.
