Here a Ngati Maniapoto ambush on unsuspecting bathing soliders turned into an oppportunity for Von Temspky’s Forest Rangers to strive for glory, and for Charles Heaphy to win his first VC - guided interpretation available.

Activities include: A presentation on the prosperous Waipa district NZ in 1850, NZ Wars Exhibition exploration activities, a visual recap of the path of war from Meremere to Rangiaowhia and hands on experience with replica weapons.

Rangiaowhia recommended visit length - 20 min

This agriculturally rich land was confiscated in one of the most decisive military moves in the Waikato campaign. Guided tour of St Paul's (1854) and Catholic mission site available.

Orakau Pa recommended visit length - 20 min

Immortalised in the movie, Rewi’s Last Stand, the Battle of Orakau was the final and arguably the most significant of the Waikato campaign - guided interpretation available.

Rewi's Memorial recommended visit length - 5 min

This memorial to Rewi Maniapoto was provided by Governor Grey once King Tawhao signalled peace in 1885 – guided interpretation available.

Te Awamutu Museum Movie Screening: Rewi's Last Stand 15 min

This 15 minute portion of NZ's first feature film depicts in surprising accuracy the Battle of Orakau.

Pirongia - Alexandra Redoubt recommended visit length - 15 min

This well preserved redoubt was used by the armed constabulary and is close to where King Tawhiao laid down his arms in 1885 - guided interpretation available.
