Te Awamutu Museum has developed an exciting and dynamic education programme for children of all ages. This programme, landmarks, is a fully integrated and balanced range of services that utilises the many resources of the museum, the community and the environment. Including inhouse museum classes, outreach visits and site tours, landmarks enables teachers to expand upon and contextualise issues raised in the classroom, and helps students to better understand the world they live in, and their place within it.

The units available complement many areas of the New Zealand curriculum, particularly the Social Sciences/Nga Tikanga a Iwi curriculum. There are also strong links to the Science, Technology, English and Arts documents.

The learning experiences we provide include ‘hands-on’ activities with artefacts, site tours, bush walks, videos, stories, displays and exhibitions, and role play. Children are encouraged to ask questions, make comments, and to take an active part. We encourage children to think for themselves and to have confidence in expressing their opinions. |

For schools unable to visit the museum, we offer an outreach programme. This service is a successful and popular way of ensuring that our programmes are made available to the widest possible audience.
Te Awamutu Museum’s education programmes are made available with the assistance of the Ministry of Education’s LEOTC (Learning Experiences Outside the Classroom) scheme. |
To discuss your requirements with our education team, please phone the Education Facilitator by phone on 07 871 4390, or by emailing education@tamuseum.org.nz |
