Te Awamutu Museum operates a comprehensive LEOTC (Learning Experiences Outside the Classroom) programme for all state funded and private schools.

Our geographical area extends from Pokeno in the north to Taumarunui in the south, Raglan in the west to Tauranga in the east, but we also cater for specific requests from schools out side this region.

We offer a range of topics within the museum, plus onsite tours to historic and environmental sites.

All programmes are flexible and can be readily adapted to meet your specific needs.

Our museum is well known for its valuable collection of Taonga, notably Uenuku. Replicas have been made of many artefacts so the students have the opportunity for 'hands on' experience.

Tours

Our programmes can include visits to historic and environmental sites such as:

  • Rangioawhia and Orakau- battlesites of the Waikato Wars
  • Yarndley’s Bush- a unique stand of kahikatea forest
  • Lake Ngaroto- a nearby peat lake which has recently undergone extensive restoration
  • Local restored colonial period cottages
  • Our local Heritage Trail
  • To Te Wananga o Aotearoa to see carvers and weavers at work

There is also 'Family Treasures'- where students research a family treasure, and an exhibition of these artefacts is put on display at the Museum.

Outreach

For schools unable to visit the museum, we offer an outreach programme. This service is a successful and popular way of ensuring that our programmes are made available to the widest possible audience.

To discuss your requirements, please phone 07 872 0085 and ask for our Museum Education Facilitator Alan Reilly, or email at: alan.reilly@waipadc.govt.nz
