Theme 1 - The Source

Wiwiri ana - oho ana i raro.

Vibrating and awakening the realms below.

 

EARLY MAORI

Why Maori came to New Zealand, how they adapted to the environment and the impact their arrival had on it.

Curricula: Social Studies, Science, Technology, English

Units:

  • The Development of the Pa,  Levels 1-4
  • Myths and Legends,  Levels 1-3
  • Harakeke,  Levels 3-4 Introducing the art, culture and uses of harakeke.
  • Gathering Food,  Levels 1-4 Traditional hunting, fishing, food gathering, cooking and storage.

THE ARRIVAL OF THE EUROPEAN

Why Europeans came to New Zealand, their beliefs and ideals, how they adapted to the environment, and the influence of traders, missionaries, farmers and soldiers.

Curricula: Social Studies, Science, Technology, English

Units

  • Family Life in 1900, Levels 1-4 Studying domestic objects from our collection. Site tour to restored cottage.
  • Going, Going, Gone Levels 2-4 A study using local cemeteries, monuments and memorials including ANZAC memorials.
  • Doing the Washing, Levels 1-3 An interactive unit exploring how the washing was done pre-electricity.   
  • Out of the Toy Box, Levels 1-4 Learn about the social significance of toys and how they work. Includes making a simple toy.
  • Going to School, Levels 1-4 What was it like going to school 100 years ago? Children dress up in old fashioned clothing.
  • Family Treasures, All levels Understanding the value of our past. Students research a family treasure, with artefacts and stories forming a Museum exhibition.
  • Battle Sites of the Waikato,  Levels 3-8 Te Awamutu was at the centre of two key battles during the Waikato Wars. The unit looks at the causes and consequences of these battles. Includes tour of battlesites.

 

Theme 2 - The Landing Place

Curricula:  Social  Studies, English

Units:

  • Our Town- Our Community, Levels 2-4 We investigate how our streets and places got their names and develop an understanding of the historical meanings behind them.
  • Celebrations, Levels 2-4  (Available Term 3) Why people come together to celebrate special events.
  • True Colours, Levels 2-8 The story of Tim and Neil Finn, of Split Enz and Crowded House fame- world famous musicians born in Te Awamutu.

 

Theme 3 - Ebb and Flow

Hei morimori hei awhi i te ao

That ripple out to encircle and embrace the world.

 

Curricula: Social Studies, Science, Technology, English

Units:

  • Yarndley’s Bush, Levels 1-8 Students visit the museum to look at the traditional ways Maori used the forest. Then they travel to the forest.
  • The Earth is Our Home, Levels 1-3 A unit for younger students  looking at enviromental issues.
  • My Backyard, Levels 1-3 (Available Term 4) Students look a typical backyard, discuss how it could be more environmentally friendly, and construct a plan.
  • Lake Ngaroto, Levels 4-8 (Available Term 2) A study of the ecosystems of a peat lake- and its problems and solutions.
